Faculty Web Site SFTP

OIT currently provides web space for faculty and adjuncts that is accessible through SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP).  In the past we used simple File Transfer Protocol (FTP), but this method is not secure especially when using wireless connections. Interception of information being transferred, such as username, password or sensitive materials, can be easily achieved.  However, with the use of SFTP, we provide a very safe environment for transfers.

Login Information

To login to your SFTP space, you will be using your Valencia Atlas account information.  This is the same username and password you use to log into Atlas and your computer on the Valencia network.

The host address for your site is and your site’s address will be{your-Atlas-username}.

Built in Client

A client dashboard is available to allow easy connection to your site.  Simply go to and login with your username and password.  Once logged in you will start in your main folder.  With the client, you can add content through the “File Upload” button located at the bottom of the page.  You can also delete, rename and create sub folders as needed.  There is also a search feature that can help you locate specific files.

Please look over the following screen shots to familiarize yourself with what you can expect to see.

FTP Clients

If you prefer not to use the built in client, you can also connect to your SFTP space via a FTP client.  A FTP client is a program that will connect you to your space and allow you to upload, edit and delete files.  There are quite a few clients available, but you will need to make sure the one you choose is SFTP compliant.

The following examples of connecting through a FTP client will be with FileZilla.  By no means do we recommend you use this client, it is simply for demonstration purposes.

Example with FileZilla

There are four pieces of information you will need to setup your connection.  You will need you host address, your username, your password and that this will be a SFTP protocol.  Your username/password is the same as you use for Atlas and your host is

All use of secure ftp access is governed under OIT technology policies located on the General Counsel policies and procedure page.  Search for "acceptable use" on the policies and procedure page.
